How believers fast

When believers fast, they abstain from food to signal dependence on God. Instead of relying on food to sustain us, we turn our focus to God and rely on Him for strength and also to entreat him for spiritual matters. It adds power to our prayers. Note that fasting is always joined with prayer, otherwise it’s just starvation.

Fasting teaches us spiritual discipline

Many great people in the Bible fasted and saw God move in miraculous ways among them, from Daniel to Esther to Paul and even Jesus. It teaches us spiritual discipline.

Fasting is part of our walk with God

Jesus said to the disciples in Matthew 6:16: “When you fast…”. This implies that as believers, fasting is a part of our walk with God. If you sincerely humble yourself before God, repent, pray and meditate on His Word, you’ll experience a heightened awareness of His presence (John 14:21). You’ll feel mentally, spiritually and physically refreshed.
